Powerful Tools for Caregivers

Do you help take care of an adult with chronic conditions? If so, you are not alone. Over 43.5 million family caregivers in America provide a vast array of emotional, financial, nursing, social, homemaking and other services on a daily or an intermittent basis.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational series designed to provide tools you need to take care of yourself.  If you take good care of yourself, you will be better prepared to take good care of your loved one. As a participant you will learn how to: reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate your feelings, balance your life, increase ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources.

Iowa State University Extension is sponsoring Powerful Tools for Caregivers in Estherville.  This program has been tested and evaluated through a grant from the U.S. Administration on Aging.

Classes consist of six, 2 ½ hour sessions held once a week. Two experienced leaders, Kelly Schultz and Dawn Stock facilitate each class. Interactive lessons, discussions and brainstorming help you take the “tools” you choose and put them into action for your life.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

DENIM DAY April 26th 2017
Denim Day is a campaign to prevent Sexual abuse through education and public awareness.  April is Sexual Violence Awareness Month, and Denim Day is a call to action for all people to come together by wearing denim as a visible sign of protest against sexual violence. By participating in Denim Day on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 you can play a role in the prevention of sexual assault. This year we ask community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion on April 26, 2017 to wear jeans as a visual sign of your support for survivors of sexual violence, and participants will also receive a sticker letting everyone know why they're wearing jeans. We can stand together to support survivors and show that we will not accept sexual violence in our community.
Why denim? Denim Day has been internationally celebrated since 1999 in protest of an Italian Supreme Court ruling that overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans. In 1992, an 18-year-old girl in Italy was raped by her driving instructor during a driving lesson. He was convicted, but in 1999, the Court overturned the verdict on the premise that “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex.”
Women of the Italian Legislature protested the decision by wearing jeans to work. As news of the decision spread, so did the protest. In April 1999, a social service agency in Los Angeles established the first Denim Day in the United States.
Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault (CAASA), carries on this tradition.  We wear denim to dispel harmful myths about sexual violence and survivors.
CAASA is a non-profit agency that provides services to victims of sexual abuse. CAASA served new sexual assault survivors each year. It is happening here and it takes local awareness, protest, and your help to end sexual violence.
We invite your workplace or school to join us! Raise awareness and funds to help survivors of sexual assault by inviting employees to donate $5 to CAASA for the chance to wear jeans for a day or contact us for Denim Day stickers that you can wear any time. All donations raised will fund CAASA to offer resources to survivors of sexual abuse.
If you are interested please contact Misty at mistyw@caasaonline.org or 712-362-3200 for Denim Day packets that include posters and stickers representing Denim Day and a return envelope for donations. Thank you for your commitment to services for survivors of sexual abuse!

EmCo. Making Optimal Changes for Successful Youth

Emmet County Making Optimal Changes for Successful Youth Coalition welcomes everyone to attend our monthly meetings. Our goal is to reduce underage drinking in Emmet County. Our vision is: "For Emmet County, the esential components of community collaboration have everyone involved, working together towards a goal oriented problem that will have visible proven results. The collaboration will know that success is achieved when there is a heigthened community awareness that has everyone believing it, buying it and owning it."
